An A-Z Report: Cruise 2012 – Part 4Posted in The Symphony Style File on: 29/06/2011
As our final Cruise 2012 A-Z instalment, this post brings you the best from designers who go by a name between P-Z – some of which will be arriving at Symphony soon.
Ports 1961 step out of their comfort zone with this new Cruise 2012 collection which is heavily built up of androgynous looks and smart tailoring. ♥
The lovely Mr. Prabal Gurung is on a career high, after recently being awarded the Swarovski Award for Womenswear at the CFDA’s, Gurung has made a splash with his latest Cruise 2012 collection presenting it in a very unique and attention-grabbing way. For Cruise 2012 the designer has partnered with rapper Rye Rye and her new music video for ‘New Thing’ – the unusual collaboration has had the internet buzzing for weeks; with Rye Rye and dance crew all donning Gurung’s Cruise pieces. The result is a collection (and music
video) that is young, fun, bright, covetable and ever-so-slightly addictive. ♥
Whatever Proenza Schouler is selling the cool kids are buying. A 1970’s patchwork-vibe and colour palette married with the Proenza-isms we have all come to know and love make this a collection that every will want and that the highstreet will imitate.
The whimsical nature of this new collection from Mr. Nicoll is perfect for Resort – we love the handkerchief hemlines and wearability of these pieces. The metallic fabrics and cute short dresses, the well-cut shorts and nonchalant second-skin silhouettes all having us wishing November would come as soon as possible ♥
McCartney’s Cruise 2012 collection is made to be mixed and matched – Hawaiian prints, turn-up cigarette pants, over-sized blazers and crisp white shirts.
Thakoon was inspired by gypsy and folk clothing traditions for Cruise 2012, but not literally – with a sporty, American edge, “I didn’t want to do a literal gypsy,” he said of his inspirations. “I wanted to do something that was a bit sportier, a bit more New York.” ♥
Tibi does what Amy Smilovic does best for this latest Cruise offering – simple, luxury basics, day wear and cute party dresses with a twist. Pieces that are trend-cend and can be worn again and again ♥
Oh Valentino! Another collection of dresses that we dream of owning – and no doubt will be seeing sprinkling the red carpet and the bodies of Hollywood’s hottest actresses.

Following on with our alphabetical Cruise report (don’t you just love things being in order) this post brings you the best from designers who go by a name between K-O – some of which will be arriving at Symphony soon. If you see this little heart ♥ the collection will be available at Symphony from November 2011…
Alber Elbaz channeled the legendary designer Madame Grès for Resort 2012. Germaine
Émilie Krebs launched her design house under the name Grès in Paris in 1942. Formally trained as a sculptress, she produced Haute Couture designs for an array of fashion icons, including the Duchess of Windsor, Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, Jacqueline Kennedy and Dolores del Río. Her signature was cut-outs on gowns that made exposed skin part of the design, yet still had a classical, sophisticated feel. Elbaz presented his take on this using “corded rope at the shoulders from which soft toga-like dresses folded and draped” which subtly exposed the models thighs. Resort 2012 also marked Elbaz’s first venture into children’s wear; featuring 4 girls dresses for Lanvin mini-me’s – too cute!
Film Director, Sofia Coppola, longtime friend of Marc Jacobs (who recently presented him with the Lifetime Achievement at the CFDA Awards) collaborated with Louis Vuitton designer Julie de Libran on this fanciful collection for Resort 2012 which features the chicest Parisian-inspired ensembles – all presented on a real grass runway at The Four
Seasons Hotel in NYC.
To achieve the relaxed, nonchalant look of this collection Marc Jacobs and team printed wallpaper patterns on the insides of the fabrics; to give them that worn, lived-in feel. We can’t take our eyes off of the studded flats. Want, want, want!
Symphony newcomer (for Autumn/Winter 2011) Michael Angel has us all excited with his latest mesmerizing Resort 2012 collection. Angel’s signature prints even featured a blown-up screened image of his Winter muse, Christy Turlington. ♥
Oscar de la Renta
Mr de la Renta showed one of his most “urban” Cruise collections to date, using Picasso as inspiration, which showed up in the colourful, graphic scribble prints. The designer also tapped into his Spanish roots – with pom-pom trimmed flamenco hats and bull-fighter-esque ensembles of matador jackets and high waisted pants.

An A-Z Report: Cruise 2012 – Part 2Posted in The Symphony Style File on: 21/06/2011
Following on with our alphabetical Cruise report (don’t you just love things being in order) This post brings you the best from
designers who go by a name between F-J – some of which will be arriving at Symphony faster than you can say “winter vacation”…
If you see this little heart ♥ the collection will be available at Symphony from November 2011
Giambattista told style.com “There are no rules anymore and I wanted to express that in my collection” – so for Resort 2012 Valli presented a collection which is a mix of colour, pattern, culture and concept. We absolutely love this green and blue floral floor-grazing gown and jacket – the repeat of the floral pattern on the lining of the latter is just perfect.
Riccardo Tisci triumphs again with an astounding Resort 2012 Collection – presenting a body of work that any fashion girl would give her right arm for. The designer took photos of original prints and digitally manipulated them onto cropped sweatshirts, blouses and skirts. However, Tisci’s favourite look was absent of print and is pictured above. We can’t wait to see what he has up his sleeve for the up and coming Couture Collection.
Creative Director Gilles Mendel was inspired by an unlikely location for Cruise – Utah! Utah’s natural beauty and breathtaking scenery inspired Gilles, in particular the stratified rock formations which he translated into his collection using hand-pleated layers on layers of fabric. This collection is a breath of fresh air for the House of Mendel – offering desirable daywear – a first for the eveningwear-centric label. ♥
Wu introduces swimwear for the first time with his Resort 2012 collection which is a continuation of the modern ladylike aesthetic that we have come to expect from the designer. The designer explained that this latest offering “is a way to dress my girl down but still have a sense of dressed up.” ♥
Symphony favourite Jonathan Saunders has created yet another collection that we are dying to get our hands on (side note: the other one, Autumn/Winter 2011 will be in-store exclusively at Symphony from September!) – featuring Victorian wallpaper motifs, 1950’s silhouette’s and Saunders sharp eye for colour the Resort 2012 collection is definitely making its way to our closets come November ♥

An A-Z Report: Cruise 2012 – Part 1Posted in The Symphony Style File on: 19/06/2011
We have often expressed our love for Cruise; as women working in fashion, the trickling in of new fashions by way of the Resort/Cruise collections breaks up these hot summer months where we can find ourselves feeling a little frazzled – and not just by Dubai’s unforgiving summer sun. We’ve wrapped our Autumn/Winter Campaign; we’re knee deep in the new magazine and quite frankly now know the AW11 runway looks and trends inside out. That is not to say that we are bored of Autumn/Winter – we can’t wait to get our hands on our Alessandra Rich lace collared fall gown in September – it is just nice to have a change of pace, a breath of fresh air if you will. Let us not gloss over the fact that Cruise is a savoir to all Dubaian’s wardrobes – an injection of summer fare that will be in-store come November 2011; when the wintery trends will be wearing thin. Cruise also offers us a whisper of what’s to come for Spring/Summer 2012 – a peak into the trends and key pieces that we will be lusting after come February; and every fashion lover enjoys a good ol’ forward-think.
So! This week and next week we will be posting our favourite Cruise looks. This post brings you the best of designers who go by a name between A-E – some of which will be arriving at Symphony faster than you can say “Hey! It’s getting cooler”…
NB: If you see this little heart ♥ the collection will be available at Symphony from November 2011
Phillip Lim’s talent knows no bounds, he is our go to designer for easy to wear wardrobe staples with a twist. We love this monochromic leopard print look. Don’t you think it would make the most comfortable, chicest flight ensemble in the world?
ACNE’s Resort Collection is so 1950’s geek chic it hurts. Playful tomboy styles with a feminine twist; think Blair Waldorf meets the Powerpuff Girls with a little bit of Daria thrown in for good measure. Loose, voluminous silhouettes created in unexpected fabrics of taffeta, organza, silk and linen. The man behind the label, Jonny Johansson, wanted to prove that ACNE is more than “jeans” – which they are best known for stateside. We think you just caught New York’s attention Jonny boy! ♥
Nicolas Ghesquiere has come over all long and airy this season and we likey! We especially covet the “double shorts” (pictured) which were inspired by Balenciaga’s famous client Mona von Bismarck’s gardening shorts – how delicious are those unusual pointed outer pockets? Love.
No-one does Resort quite like Mr Lagerfeld. Front-Rower Rachel Bilson noted “I’ve seen everything from a day at the beach to a wedding”, quite Rachel! With a whopping 73 looks there is plenty to chose from, as Tim Blanks cleverly pointed out “Such variables are a smart commercial move, given that Chanel’s Cruise collection stays in stores longer than any other of the collections that Lagerfeld designs each year for the label”.
Why wouldn’t you want to buy what Chloë Sevigny is selling? Our longtime style crush throws together ensembles with such skill that she makes her peers look dull. For Resort 2012 each and every look is “soooo Chloë”, that perfect mix of good and bad, masculine and feminine, high fashion and high street – and the leather lace pieces blow our minds! ♥
This season Benz was inspired by the idea of Bermuda incorporating Bermuda shorts and swimwear into a collection for the first time. Benz’s offering of blazers, shorts, caftans and beach trousers are perfect for the girl who doesn’t take dressing or herself too seriously. We love love love the Alejandro Ingelmo x Chris Benz trainers which also feature. The palette recalls summer days of frolic; mustard, tangerine and ocean blue are mixed with eye-popping exotic prints. ♥
Lam’s Resort 2012 collection was inspired by travels from Bhutan to Phuket, Thailand; incorporating a satisfying mix of colour blocked American sportswear with ikat prints and scarf dresses in tradition Buddhist-inspired prints. ♥
Erdem channeled actress Romy Schneider and her appearances in Luchino Visconti’s films this season, concentrating on “a nipped-in, Fifties silhouette” – we love the ankle grazing lengths and his signature use of lace as well as the dipped backs and cape detailing in this collection.
Erin Fetherston’s first ever Cruise collection for her newly launched line ERIN does not disappoint. A lovely selection of 24 dresses which as Erin puts it “Can be worn on New Year’s Eve and then the next week with flats.” We adore the playfulness of this great-price-point collection ♥
Check back on Tuesday for the next instalment, F-J

Barneys New York X Daphne GuinnessPosted in The Symphony Style File on: 07/06/2011
Director Brennan Stasiewicz Captures Fashion’s Enigma At Home and On Display
Documentary filmmaker Brennan Stasiewicz infiltrates the cosseted world of Daphne Guinness in Daphne’s Window. Featuring intimate footage of the icon at her Fifth Avenue apartment, the short follows the eccentric fashion patron as she prepares for her recent installation in the windows of Barneys New York. The storefront showcased her collection of pieces by designer Lee Alexander McQueen and a selection from the archive of fashion editor Isabella Blow, which Guinness purchased in its entirety last year. The display culminated in a performance art piece in which Guinness dressed for the Met ball in one of the flagship’s windows, modelling a lilac feathered gown designed by McQueen’s Sarah Burton. “She appears to me as someone always in a window,” says Stasiewicz. “Someone you can approach and see, but you remain on the other side.” This year brings a multitude of projects for the heiress: her sculptural armoured glove collaboration with jeweller Shaun Leane (pictured in today’s film) will be exhibited by Jay Jopling in a private viewing in London later this month; and in September a retrospective at The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology will pay homage to her style. “Daphne is someone to take pleasure in, and in many ways, someone who incites moments of wonder,” says Stasiewicz.
